Happy New Year and best wishes for a heathy and prosperous 2024! And, Happy 25th Anniversary to the Presidio Sentinel, without which we would not have the opportunity to share our news directly with all of you in Mission Hills, delivered freely to your front doorsteps.

Before I dive into the new year, I’d like to thank business owners and their staff who set aside valuable space for the Mission Hills Business Improvement District’s (BID’s) November and December Toys for Tots collection bins: Lewis|Fay, M-Theory, Mission Hills Nursery, State Farm Insurance, Thorn Brewing Company – Mission Hills and U.S. Bank – Mission Hills. Several of the bins were overflowing with sought after toys when we delivered them to Mission Hills own Fire Station 8, thanks to the generosity of shoppers, neighbors and nearby business owners. Toys for Tots will distribute the toys to children up to age 12 through 250 non-profit organizations.

If you are anything like me, over the years you may have started making New Years’ resolutions around the changes you’d like to see in the coming months. Personally, I plan to continue enjoying healthier snacks, working out a few times a week and playing men’s league basketball; all of which I was able to successfully incorporate into last year’s weekly schedule. And, I am very excited to see my son join his first little league team at the top of the year.

Having been elected in November, the 2024 BID directors and officers are looking forward to the work ahead and the board’s strategic planning workshop taking place on January 10. We will be focused on doing more to create a true appreciation for having chosen to be in Mission Hills, whether you are a business owner or a patron. This year’s board of directors are: President, Jamaal Jackson, U. S. Bank Mission Hills Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager; Vice President, J. Daniel Geddis, partner in Team D&B at One Mission Realty; Secretary, Amra Mulic, owner, All American Tailor; Treasurer, Sarah Mattia, co-owner Pizza e Birra; and directors Jesse Zmuda, owner, Backbone Floral; Michael Metcalf, owner Metcalf Consulting, and Marea Riedler, owner, A Designed Space.

Many of you already know, the Mission Hills BID, in a contract with the City of San Diego, works hard to advance its mission to:

a)  enhance the growth and improvement of Mission Hills businesses;
b)  create partnerships between business and property owners that promote economic revitalization and combat deterioration in the community served by the Mission Hills Business Improvement District; and
c)  administer business and property owner assessment districts under contract with the City of San Diego, all of which are provided for by one or more ordinances of the San Diego City Council, including but not limited to Ordinance #0-17229 (the “Ordinance”), which may be amended from time to time by the San Diego City Council

The Mission Hills BID membership includes those persons (including corporations and other associations) holding business tax certificates, paying business improvement district charges assessed by the City of San Diego, within the boundaries of the Mission Hills Business Improvement District. All such members have the right to vote on all matters requiring a vote of the membership and may seek to be on the Mission Hills BID board of directors.

As a reminder, the Mission Hills BID meets on the second and third Wednesdays of each month at 3:00 PM. Our meetings take place in the Community Room of the Mission Hills Library. In accordance with the Brown Act, agendas are posted on the BID’s website. On the second Wednesday we conduct our committee meetings; including Promotions, Economic Development, Design, Mission Hills Parking Advisory, and Executive committees. Robust discussions take place at the committee level. On the third Wednesday the meeting of the full board of directors occurs where information is distributed and decisions are reached that impact the BID membership. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings.
