Colors on Canvas 2026 Banner Art Awards Celebration
Colors on Canvas 2025 Banner Art Awards Celebration
Congratulations and thank you to each young artist participant from Grant TK8 School. Their 70 hand painted Colors on Canvas banners showcased the businesses of Mission Hills. This banner installation on lamp posts created a sense of vibrancy and place!
The Colors on Canvas 2026 Banner Art Awards Celebration was held on Monday, February 23, 2026 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM inside the Library Shop Mission Hills, located at 925 West Washington. We greatly appreciate Scott Ehrig-Burgess, Public Engagement Manager and his staff for their partnership! Thanks to The Grant School Foundation, refreshments were generously served outdoors by board members from the Mission Hills BID.
Thanks to a grant from the County of San Diego, at the urging of Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, and continuing support from the City of San Diego, beginning in September 2025, Grant School Art Coordinator Sarah Ekedal worked with TK8 students to create 70 colorful banners. Rosanna Photography photographed the banner pick-up, individual banners to create mini-banners for take-home by students and their families, for the celebration cake, and judges forms. She also photo journaled the Awards Celebration. The Mission Hills BID owes a debt of gratitude to the 14 Colors on Canvas judges who created 5,600 individual pieces of data to evaluate every banner: Jill Boyle a Mission Hills resident, Jay Clevenger of San Diego City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn’s office, Joshua Dunn of San Diego County Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe’s office, Daniel Geddis Team D&B at One Mission Realty, Jamaal Jackson of US Bank – Mission Hills, Sarah Mattia, Pizza e Birra, Michelle Muñoz, City of San Diego EDD, Marea Riedler of A Designed Space, Diego Vélez of Diego Vélez Realty, Jason Weisz of Senator Akilah Weber Pierson’s office, Steve Wheeler, Mission Hills Library, Stuart White of Stuart White Design, Sloane Wormser of Salon Sloane and Jesse Zmuda a florist and Mission Hills resident.
The banners were installed on lampposts throughout Mission Hills from December 2025 through March 2026. And, yes, among the attendees, you may see some familiar faces, a friend or a neighbor or yourself in the photo line-up.
As you are looking through the photo gallery and see a banner you wish to have, please contact Susan McNeil Schreyer at MissionHillsBID@gmail.com and she will let you know if it is still available. We are seeking a $49 delivery fee for each banner. How lucky would you be to land a hand painted banner of your business? All proceeds go toward next year’s Colors on Canvas 2027.
Please scroll through the gallery and enjoy for the first time or relive the fun evening!
Be sure to also check out the list of top scoring hand painted banner artists. This year we recognized 31 winners. Surely you will know some of them!
