Colors on Canvas: First Impressions is a hand painted banner art contest for artists of all ages and skill levels. Artists were encouraged to paint their first impression of Mission Hills by highlighting some aspect of the community.
The contest launched in March with a call for artists and the banners were installed throughout Mission Hills May 2-15, 2019.
This contest was made possible thanks to sponsorships and partnerships from:
- The County of San Diego
- The City of San Diego
- The Patio Group’s Gina Champion-Cain
- GrantK8 School
- Paint Box Art Studio
- The Moll Family
A panel of fourteen local business owners and residents served as judges to evaluate and rank the banners based on the banner artwork:
- being Mission Hills centric
- having a clear interpretation to the viewer
- exhibiting an artistic quality
- creative use of color
- a finished piece of work.
Entry categories include school children by grade level to professional artists. The Marianne Kalem Legacy Award grand prize of $500 will be presented by Patterson Engineering, Inc. at the Awards Reception on Wednesday, June 5 at The Frame Maker, on Reynard Way in Mission Hills.
