Food Obsessed in Mission Hills

A Word from our President

By Dixie Hall, President Mission Hills BID and DixiePops Owner

The Mission Hills BID and Mission Hills Town Council, joined by The Presidio Sentinel news publication, will be co-hosting a Communitywide Forum on Resolving Homelessness on Tuesday evening, August 31, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Mission Hills library, 215 West Washington Street. City, County and non-profit professionals who, on a daily basis, work with the unsheltered community living in our neighborhood, have agreed to participate as panelists.  During this forum, the panelists will educate and inform us on what they are doing in Mission Hills, specifically, to address the issues.  Additionally, a question and answer session will take place.  Please mark August 31, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. for this must-attend event.

Assemblymember Chris Ward presents Sushi Deli 1 with Small Business of the Year for 2021.
On hand to celebrate Sushi Deli as Small Business of the Year for 2021 are (left to right) Assemblymember Chris Ward, Manager Miki Holmes, owners Don and Keiko Holmes, and Manager Chris Holmes.

In my role as president of the Mission Hills BID I sometimes receive invitations to do fun things.  Recently I had the pleasure of joining Sushi Deli founders, Hiroe and Motoju Otake; owners, Keiko and Don Holmes; and sister-brother managers Miki Holmes and Chris Holmes; six wonderful people at Sushi Deli 1, in celebration of their award as Small Business of the Year for 2021 California Small Business Day by Assembly member Christopher Ward. As a small business owner, it was an inspiring occasion complete with a resolution from the California State Assembly and a delicious Japanese lunch hosted by the Otake and Holmes families. It was also interesting to catch up with our Assembly member over lunch and hear all he is doing in Sacramento.  Congratulations Sushi Deli 1!

Speaking of restaurants, local resident Merritte Powell’s long awaited and COVID delayed expansion of his original La Puerta Mexican food restaurant into Mission Hills, has opened at 4020 Goldfinch Street!  One easily sees La Puerta being a hangout for people who want a high level of hospitality while enjoying quality Mexican food and drinks in a fun atmosphere.  Powell shared, “Our Sinaloa inspired family recipes demand we make nearly everything on the menu fresh daily and never use artificial flavorings or enhancers.”

Our BID executive director and a couple board members enjoyed pre-opening  scrumptious appetizers and entrees as well as delicious beverages and shared great service received at every point.  ¡Excellente y bienvenidos La Puerta!

At the risk of appearing to be food obsessed, with August already here, planning is underway for the 9th Annual Taste of Mission Hills.  Please join me in saving Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 5 until 9 p.m. for this neighborhood-wide happening, which includes venues on West Lewis, Fort Stockton, Goldfinch, West Washington, Reynard Way and India Street. The participating restaurant list is growing. Three Old Town Trolleys have been reserved. Musicians are being sought.

The Mission Hills BID is actively looking for walls for murals. The projects range from temporary installations to permanent, and from out-of-state artists to local. If you have a wall in mind, please reach out to us at MissionHillsBID@gmail.com.

And to end on a fun note, while there are no National holidays to celebrate in August, there are a ton of “National Days” to enjoy within Mission Hills. For example, August 9 is National Book Lovers Day – perfect day to check out the library (check out – get it?). August 10is National Lazy Day – need we say more? August 15is National Relaxation Day – what better reason to hang out at one of the many restaurants and enjoy someone else cooking for you? Book a service at one of the many Mission Hills hair salons for August 22 and National Brazilian Blowout Day. August 25 is Kiss and Make-up Day (a small gift would work as well). Treat your pooch to a spa day or a yummy dessert on August 26 for National Dog Day. Lastly celebrate National Red Wine Day on the 28 at a bar or eatery near you. It’s been a long month of mini celebrations and you need it.
