Lovingly Painted Banners are in the Air
A Word from our President – By Jamaal Jackson, President of Mission Hills BID and Branch Manager / Assistant Vice President U.S. Bank – Mission Hills
During the month of February expressions of love are everywhere. Around the world lovers — serious and casual – young and old – celebrate. I’d wager a bet that if they knew about Mission Hills they’d wish they could spend Valentine’s Day with us.
Mission Hills is the perfect place to prepare for and spend Valentine’s Day. Need to get pampered for this special day? Mission Hills has a treasure trove of salons, spas and shops that will make you feel beautiful inside and out.
From West Lewis to Fort Stockton, along Goldfinch, West Washington and India Street there are so many gift buying options. Whether you wish a gift for an infant or the person who seemingly has everything, gardening supplies for your green thumbed Valentine, specialty food, or cooking supplies, a Panama hat or a European motorcycle, our gift offering are endless. Of course, wine or champagne can complete your special day. From French Champagne to California sparkling or Spanish Cava and Italian Prosecco, our local wine shops will offer expert advice in every price range.
Want flowers?? Mission Hills certainly has those. A beautiful bouquet, a single stem or some new plants for the yard, everything is right around the corner.
Shopping done – why not make a full day of this celebration of love. Say “good morning” and treat your loved one to coffee at any one of a number of our locally owned coffee houses. Mission Hills is filled with great restaurants too. You may enjoy a delicious breakfast, a pleasant lunch, or a fabulous dinner without ever leaving the neighborhood. But make your reservations early – or consider dining out on Friday or Sunday to celebrate the special day with smaller crowds.
Valentine’s Day is also the perfect time to think beyond the love of your life to so many others that could use a little extra love. Maybe this is the time to check on an elderly neighbor with a cute Valentine and some heart shaped cookies. Or maybe you know an overwhelmed mom with some little ones who could use an extra hand. Is there a friend or family member that you’ve been too busy to connect with? Take this holiday of love to reach out and remind them they too are loved. A kind word to a stranger, a surprise of a treat or coffee to some unsuspecting soul and both of your days will be made better.
This month, please consider exploring and sharing your appreciation of National Black History Month by promoting meaningful discussion using hashtags such as #BlackHistoryMonth and #BlackHistoryMatters on social. The celebration is dedicated to acknowledging the significant impact that Black individuals and communities have had on our nation’s history, culture, and progress. This national holiday serves as a platform to educate, reflect upon, and celebrate the rich heritage and diverse experiences of Black Americans. Join me in recognizing and honoring the achievements, contributions and history of Black Americans to our American history.
Next, on our events for 2026, is the Colors on Canvas children’s hand painted Banner Art Awards Reception taking place at Library Shop Mission Hills, 925 West Washington Street on Monday February 23, from 4:00 – 7:00. All are welcome, just RSVP the number in your group who wish to attend, by or before Monday, February 16. As this is being written, the evaluations from a panel of 15 judges are being tabulated. The seventy lovingly painted banners were installed on lamp posts throughout Mission Hills BID on December 22 and will continue to be until March 2. We are especially thankful to the County of San Diego and Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe for this year’s sponsorship support. As you drive, roll or walk the neighborhood, please look up and enjoy them.
Jumping ahead to early-March, the partnership with Mission Hills BID and the San Diego County Fair continues. If you hold a current business license within our BID boundaries, please reach out to MissionHillsBID@gmail.com to find out how you can take part in the BID/Fair community banner partnership program. A professional photographer is scheduled to be at a Mission Hills BID business taking photos on the morning of Tuesday, March 3. The resulting 70 banners will be installed throughout our BID from mid-May through July 5.
Please continue to check out our website and socials for the most up-to-date information on our meetings and more. Let us know what we are doing right and what more you would like to see from us. We want to hear from you!
Love, share, volunteer, get involved… happy February from the Mission Hills BID.
