MTS Bus Line 83 in Mission Hills

In September the MTS board voted to extend the 83 bus line to the Old Town Transit Center, but cut hours to midday only, from approximately 8 am to 3 pm.

We want to thank everyone who phoned, emailed, or attended MTS board meetings. We especially thank Patricia Paylor and Sharon Gehl for their ongoing dedication to alerting and updating the Mission Hills Parking Advisory Committee and the Mission Hills Business Improvement District in advance of every MTS decision, so that we were able to fully participate.

With Ms. Paylor’s and Ms. Gehl’s leadership we kept bus service in North and South Mission Hills that was slated to be discontinued, and we improved the route to make it useful for more people. Unfortunate, the limited service hours means not all current riders will be accommodated.

Here is the official wording:

  • Service would operate during weekday middays only, between approx. 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • The segment along Washington St. and into Hillcrest would be discontinued from Route 83, but remain served by Route 10.
  • A new northern terminal would be established at Old Town Transit Center, and the north Mission Hills alignment would change from Fort Stockton Dr. to Sunset Blvd./Juan St.

The MTS staff shared the changes will happen in January or June 2018. They will let us know beforehand, so we can help them spread the word. We want people who can use the new route to benefit from it. MTS staff said that if ridership increases in the midday with the new route, they could justify increasing hours to full day again.

The only bus that serves both north and south Mission Hills is an amenity that we don’t want to lose! As the saying goes, “use it or lose it”.

Thank again for all of your help! Please check in for updates.
