Remembering Stephen G. Cline

Remembering Stephen Gary Cline, veteran criminal defense attorney.

Steve passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

In Mission Hills this erudite volunteer was the go-to neighbor for many.

Steve was knowledgeable. He was no nonsense. He was zealous. He was tough. He was straight forward. He was the kind of person we wanted on our team.

Steve was elected to and served for many years on Uptown Planners, advising and informing discretionary development in six neighborhoods, representing Mission Hills. He also served on the Washington Street Maintenance Assessment District (MAD) Citizen Advisory Committee and on the Mission Hills Town Council, most recently as its President. He was a skilled attorney which often helped in emotionally fueled neighborhood discussion. With regard to an ongoing neighborhood concern, Steve offered, “I have open homicide cases that have not had this much email traffic.”

Steve’s longtime career on San Diego’s criminal defense bar frequently had him in the courtroom. His cases were often covered on the evening newscast.

Still, he found time to answer text messages, get together for a drink to swap neighborhood stories and lend a helpful word or hand whenever needed.
