Uptown-bikeways

The following information was shared with the Mission Hills BID from the Uptown Bikeways Project on April 10, 2015:

We are pleased to present a new way to stay informed about the Uptown Bikeways. During the project’s engineering design, construction, and launch phases, these email updates will share information about the latest project developments, upcoming outreach activities, and related information.

Latest Developments

Since completion of the planning phase in early 2014, work on preliminary engineering and design has been underway. This includes detailed engineering analysis and technical studies of the proposed bikeway designs for 12 miles of bikeways along the three major project routes.

SANDAG staff has been in touch with community leaders and stakeholders and have received extensive community input during the project’s planning phase, as well as throughout the first phases of design. As a result, numerous potential solutions to primary concerns and challenges have been explored. We are coordinating with the City of San Diego and Uptown Community Parking District on a complementary parking strategy and completing a preliminary traffic analysis with the City of San Diego on the “Transforming Hillcrest” design concept that was proposed by a community member for the University Avenue segment of the project.

Recently, community members raised concerns regarding some of the project design concepts, both proposed by SANDAG and by other members of the community. We appreciate this feedback and will address these concerns in the coming weeks.

Our next step is to present the details and current development status of the project to the SANDAG Transportation Committee, a policy committee of our Board of Directors, and request direction going forward. We expect to make this presentation at the Committee meeting on June 5, 2015 and will email you again when this is confirmed.  A community meeting that had been tentatively scheduled for April 23will be rescheduled pending direction from the Transportation Committee.  For more information, visit the Committee webpage.  Agenda materials are normally posted one week prior to the meeting.

About the Project
The Uptown Bikeways will create connections within neighborhoods, improve streets, and create links to the larger bike network being built throughout the region. A total of 12 miles of on-street bikeways are included in this project from Old Town and Mission Valley through Uptown to Downtown, as well as from Uptown to North Park and University Heights to Balboa Park. The Uptown Bikeways project is one of the first high priority projects identified in the San Diego Regional Bike Plan to be funded for implementation.
