New Parking “Daylighting” Law in effect January 1, 2025 in California

New law affects parking  near intersections as a result of California Assembly Bill (AB) 413

A new law AB 413, known as the “Daylighting” law, went into effect January 1, 2025 and affects where motorists are allowed to stop or park a car on the approaching side of a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

It is estimated this law will impact 16,000 intersections in San Diego, but as of December 2024, only about 100 have updated signs or red curbs. The law allows enforcement regardless of whether a curb is painted red, meaning motorists may still receive a citation.

The City of San Diego is issuing warnings for the first 60 days after the law took effect. Beginning March 1, 2025, those stoping or parking within 20 feet of any crosswalk, marked or unmarked, may receive a citation

Update – March 5, 2025:

The City of San Diego Transportation Department will begin evaluating and installing red curbs in the area consistent with AB413.
